Abstract

SUMMARYesp@cenet® is a free Web-based patent search and document service provided by the European Patent Office (EPO). It offers desktop access to the bibliographic data and full text of patent applications and granted patents of the EPO, European national patent agencies, the World Intellectual Patent Organization, and many non-European nations, including the United States and Japan. As of early 2003, esp@cenet®provided access to more than 42.5 million patent documents for more than 70 countries. This article reviews the variety of basic and advanced interfaces and gateways within esp@cenet®, as well as its search, browse and retrieval options, and other components. For librarians, as well as non-specialists, esp@cenet®offers a central framework that provides comprehensive access to a wide range of significant national, regional, and international patent collections.
