Abstract

Esophageal Trauma can be due to a wide variety of causes from caustic injury to penetrating trauma. Patients can present critically ill with life threatening injuries. Management of patients with esophageal trauma may require surgical, endoscopic and intensive care support. It is associated with significant morbidity and mortality. The diagnosis can be subtle and missed with delay to diagnosis and treatment associated with worse outcomes. This article examines and reports on the key aspects and principles in diagnosing and managing patients with esophageal trauma.
