Abstract

Metastatic renal tumors are often observed at autopsy, but are rarely encountered clinically. We experienced a patient with esophageal cancer with a renal metastasis which was detected 9 months after radical operation for the esophageal cancer and successfully resected. A 65-year-old man was admitted to the hospital because of a right renal tumor. These was a past history of undergoing operation for esophageal carcinoma 9 months earlier and of receiving postoperative chemotherapy and radiotherapy. Right nephrectomy was performed. Pathological examination revealed metastatic squamous cell carcinoma from the esophageal carcinoma. Chemotherapy and local hyperthermia were done postoperatively, but the patient died 4 months after nephrectomy. Ten surgicall treated cases of renal metastasis from esophageal carcinoma have been reported in the Japanese literature so far. The prognosis of them were remarkably poor, most patients dying within one year. It is considered that microscopic metastases to many organs should already exist when the renal tumor is detected.
