Abstract

Eosinophilic oesophagitis is a chronic inflammatory, immunoallergic disease of the oesophagus which has increased its prevalence in recent years, and is present in both children and adults and has a broad geographical distribution. The most common symptom in adults is usually mild dysphagia, which may be intermittent or persistent, occasionally leading to food impaction. This article presents a review of this condition, describing the factors most likely involved in its aetiology, the clinical and diagnostic criteria, differential diagnosis and the currently accepted therapeutic approach.
