Abstract

Bimalleolar and trimalleolar fractures of the ankle are amog the most common injuries treated by orthopaedic surgeons. We retrospectively reviewed seventynine patients who underwent surgical treatment of an unstable bimalleolar or trimalleolar fracture of the ankle. The aim of the present study was to determine the outcomes of this kind of fractures after surgical treatment and to identify the significant factors in predicting good or fair outcomes. The outcomes were evaluated after a minimum follow-up period of 1 year (maximum 4 years) with clinical and radiographic evaluations. The functional outcomes were evaluated with the functional scale Olerud-Molander Ankle Score (OMAS). We have also analyzed which factors may predict functional recovery. Results: Sixty patients (76%) had no or mild limitations only in recreational activities with good or excellent functional outcomes according to the OMAS (>60). Only nineteen patients (24%) had significant limitations and fair functional outcomes according to the OMAS ( 60, BMI>40 and Weber B and C fractures were predictive of fair functional recovery.
