Abstract

FimH adhesins M1L and M1H are differently adapted to colonization of primary normal and secondary pathological niches of humanE. coli. The ML phenotype is typical and optimal for intestinalE. coli, while MH phenotype predominates among pathogenic strains and is undersirable for the eubiotic intestinalE. coli strain M17.
