Abstract

SUMMARY A series of experiments is described in which newborn lambs were (a) dosed orally with strains of E. coli; (b) exposed to an E. coli-contaminated environment; and (c) subjected to chilling in a contaminated environment. E. coli, 0121: H19 (strain 207) when given orally consistently produced diarrhoea and death in newborn lambs. Four other strains (018: H −; 02: H6; (04): H −; 0113: H21) were, by comparison, only mildly pathogenic. Oral dosing before taking colostrum caused diarrhoea and death in more lambs than dosing after taking colostrum. Exposure to a contaminated environment did not bring about illness unless the lambs were chilled by immersion in cold water.
