Abstract
Since its beginnings, assisted reproduction techniques (ART) have evolved considerably. The development of ICSI (intracytoplasmic sperm injection) made possible the treatment of many cases of male sterility. The morphologic observation of oocytes and embryos and their classification and selection resulted in an increase in the pregnancy rates. In the present a new technique has been developed for the observation of sperm under the microscope with high magnification, allowing a better selection of the sperm cells used for microinjection. The introduction of this technique called IMSI (intracytoplasmic morphologically selected sperm injection) has resulted in higher pregnancy rates and reduced abortion rates.
