Abstract
Erythropoietic protoporphyria was observed in four related persons, and 20 cases from the literature were surveyed. In all cases sunlight was a major precipitating factor. Erythema and edema are early changes in this "solar urticaria" and a late eczematous stage occurs in some cases. Erythropoietic protoporphyrin was ten to 50 times normal levels in patients with signs and symptoms.
