Abstract

During the examination of peripheral blood smears from six patients who had sickle cell anemia with superimposed pulmonary emboli (confirmed by autopsy in three patients), blister cells and irregularly contracted cells of thorn, helmet, and triangular shapes as well as spherical, crenated, burr, and fragmented cells were seen. The changes in the morphology of erythrocytes in association with luminal occlusion of multiple arteries are similar to those observed in patients with other types of microangiopathy.
