Abstract

ABSTRACTOn the basis of selected works by the ‘Vormärz’ writer Luise Mühlbach, this article examines the extent to which the writer's assertions relate to the image she portrays of her protagonists. This question seems all the more interesting because Mühlbach was socially and politically engaged, practised social criticism and pleaded for a change in the situation of women. The upheavals in the social and political spheres of the nineteenth century enabled Mühlbach to include aspects of women's emancipation in her writing. The focus of this article is on her portrayal of female protagonists. In addition, it questions whether Mühlbach's women accept their role in life, or whether they are able to protest against male domination and thus to secure their freedom.
