Foot infections are a common cause of hospitalization in people with diabetes. Diabetic foot infections are associated with increased risk of amputation and death. This monograph reviews the diagnosis and treatment of diabetic foot infections with particular attention to a new carbapenem antibiotic, ertapenem, which has the potential to reduce inpatient length of stay and hospital-associated costs.
