Abstract

Richard Horton1 writes of the unfortunate consequences that may follow errors in medicine. He asserts that through discussion, doctors can learn from their errors. There is a silver lining—hopefully a wiser and more humble physician. Horton points out the inevitability of error not only in medicine, but also in “any other sphere of human activity.” However, medicine is different from most any other realm of human activity. Because errors in medicine can lead to tragic consequences for the patient, the doctor should make every effort to use prudent judgment and intelligence in making medical decisions.
