Epub 2009 May 28; doi:10.1111lj.1399-5448.2009.00516.x Investigators from Poland assessed the frequency of a missed diagnosis of type 1 diabetes mellitus (T1DM) and analyzed the role demographic factors played in these errors. Hospital records of all children younger than 17 years old who presented with T1DM between 1999 and 2005 and were admitted directly or transferred from regional hospitals to a single tertiary care center were reviewed. Children with type 2 diabetes mellitus, slowly progressive forms of T1DM not requiring insulin initially, or autoimmune polyendocrine deficiency syndrome were excluded from the study. Delay in diagnosis was defined as no diagnosis of T1DM on the first visit because of wrong interpretation of main diabetes symptoms, exclusive treatment of additional signs or concomitant diseases,...
