Abstract
Analytic expressions are derived for (1) the error in the area-averaged rainfall as estimated by a network of raingauges; (2) the fluctuations in the estimate; and (30) the actual variance of the area-averaged rainfall in terms of the mean, the mean square and the space autocorrelation function of the areal distribution of rainfall. The error equation is evaluated for an exponential autocorrelation function and a simple approximate expression is obtained.
