Abstract
In the present paper the benefit of using error correcting codes in optical communication systems is discussed. In commercial systems with direct detection receivers coding improves the receiver performance and overcomes imperfections such as tolerances in fiber attenuation and dispersion or in laser spectral width. In coherent optical systems coding reduces the influences of laser phase noise and the laser linewidth requirements
