Abstract

A variety of enzymes immobilization methods are being developed to enhance biocatalyst performance, particularly lipases, which have attracted much attention for their extensive applications. This review provides a bibliometric and patent analysis of lipase immobilization techniques by scientific papers and patents in Web of Science and WIPO databases. Immobilized lipases are being extensively used in the research areas of Chemistry and Biotechnology & Applied Microbiology, mainly for the production of flavor esters and biodiesel. China, India, and Brazil, and institutions related to these countries, stand out as the most academically productive in terms of lipase immobilization research since 1976 and in the last five years. Researchers from these countries with studies in the fields of Chemistry, Biotechnology, and Energy Fuels are highlighted in this review. Trend analysis of the last 5 and 10 years revealed that lipase immobilization techniques and materials, such as sol–gel synthesis, magnetic nanoparticles, and crosslinked enzyme aggregates, remain important; other technologies, including ionic liquids and ultrasonication, have been increasingly applied to improve lipase immobilization. Patent analysis revealed a large number of filed patents, indicative of the industrial potential of immobilized lipases. These findings underscore the importance of research on lipase immobilization for various applications.
