A large number, possibly hundreds, of nonpolar organic compounds cause mortality within a very narrow range of whole-body tissue concentrations (∼ 2–8 µmol/g wet weight or about 50 µmol/g lipid) in small aquatic organisms, while exposure-based metrics (e.g., lethal concentration, 50% [LC50] values) span approximately 6 orders of magnitude. The range for polar organic compounds acting by the same mode of action is also narrow, but lower (∼ 0.6–2 µmol/g).
