Abstract

The authors of the published study, “Are Patient and Surgeon Expectations after ACL Reconstruction Realistic?” determined that some aspects of their paper required further clarification. First, the fourth and fifth sentences in the Results section of the abstract are unclear and should be replaced with: “Arthroscopic evidence of cartilage damage was independently associated with worse patient and surgeon expectations (OR 2.92 [95% CI 1.07-7.96]); p = 0.04. Our analysis by surgeon found that there were important individual differences among the surgeons in the study. Specifically, when compared to one surgeon whose estimates were used as the reference benchmark; five surgeons anticipated lower patient-reported outcomes.” Next, the second sentence under the subhead Relationship Between Patient Parameters and Expectations in the Results section should be replaced with: “Five surgeons (Surgeons A-E) had lower expectations of patients’ eventual outcomes than did our reference surgeon (Surgeon G).” Finally, the last sentence under the subhead Relationship Between Patient Parameters and Expectations in the Results section should be replaced with: “After controlling for confounding variables such as patient age and ACL graft construct, higher surgeon expectations were independently associated with a lack of arthroscopic evidence of cartilage damage (OR 2.92 [95% CI 1.07-7.96]); p = 0.04. Furthermore, five surgeons (Surgeons A-E) had lower expectations of patients’ eventual outcomes than did our reference surgeon (Surgeon G). Surgeon A: OR 0.05 [0.007 – 0.36]; p = 0.003; Surgeon B: OR 0.004 [0-0.04]; p < 0.001; Surgeon C: OR 0.03 [0.004-0.17]; p < 0.001; Surgeon D: OR 0.01 [0.001-0.096]; p < 0.001; Surgeon E: OR 0.08 [0.01-0.60]; p < 0.014).” The authors apologize for these errors.
