Abstract

Sodium sulfate/magnesium sulfate/potassium chloride is an osmotic pill laxative recently approved by the U.S. Food and Drug Administration for colonoscopy preparation in adults. During our first week of using this agent, 3 patients undergoing endoscopy and colonoscopy were found to have caustic-appearing gastric ulcers. Two patients had chronic heartburn and associated risk factors. The third case was of a patient with Lynch syndrome undergoing surveillance colonoscopy. No patients had previously known gastric pathologic conditions or use of nonsteroidal anti-inflammatory agents.
