Abstract

Ernst Barlach who was born in a small north German town in 1870 and who died in 1938, defamed and persecuted by the Nazis, is one of the most important artists of the German expressionistic era. My own fascination for Barlach's work began when I was an adolescent. I still remember clearly two statues which I first encountered in the Kronprinzenpalais in Berlin when I was about sixteen years old, and from that day on I tried to see Barlach's sculptures and prints whenever an opportunity presented itself. Later, I saw two performances of his dramatic works which left an indelible impression on me. These plays incited in me a desire to know more about the man Barlach.
