A s a multi- program Department of Energy laboratory, Berkeley Lab is dedicated to performing leading edge research in the biological, physical, materials, chemical, energy, environmental and computing sciences. It is situated in Berkeley, California 15 miles east of San Francisco and is located on 130 acres i n the hills overlooking the campus of the University of California at Berkeley (Figure 1). Like other national laboratories in the United States, Berkeley Lab is p r i m a r i l y funded b y the U . S . D e p a r t m e n t of E n e r g y . T h e D e p a r t m e n t of E n e r g y has contracted with the University of California system to manage the Laboratory. Charles V . Shank, the inventor of the femtosecond laser, is the Lab's director. Ernest Orlando Lawrence, the Lab's founder and the first of its nine Nobel prize winners, invented the cyclotron, w h i c h led to a G o l d e n A g e of particle physics and revolutionary Fig. 1. Berkeley Lab affords a panoramic view of the San Francisco Bay with the Gold Gate Bridge in the distant background.
