Abstract

Significance The piece followed an expansive commentary from Eritrean President Isaias Afewerki, outlining Eritrea's enduring interest in Ethiopia's stability, which described the TPLF as a destructive and divisive force. It also came amid reports of continued direct and indirect Eritrean military actions targeting Tigray. Impacts If Eritrea becomes discontented with the peace process, it could use proxy and direct action to disrupt the situation. Beyond Tigray, Eritrea could serve as an important ally in Ethiopia's complex relations with Sudan and Egypt. The recently forged Ethiopia-Eritrea-Somalia axis may be unravelling and may weaken further.
