Abstract

Eriocaulon schimperi K6rn. is one of the most robust and conspicuous species of Eriocaulon in Africa, forming rosette-like clumps of thick, broad leaves at the apex of a tough rootstock or short rhizome. Several stout scapes up to 35 cm or more high arise from the rosette, each topped by a white or greyish-white capitulum about 10-15 mm wide. It is confined to the montane zone of eastern Africa from Ethiopia to N Malawi at altitudes between 2000 and 3000 m, where it occurs in marshy grassland, along streamsides and in peat bogs with sphagnum moss and sedges. E. schimperi is very variable, and in common with many other afromontane species, populations in different mountain areas sometimes appear very different in facies.
