Abstract

Rapid growth of low-cost airlines has changed the landscape of market competition for the airline industry. Affordability of air travel is the new target that is being sought after by many airlines. Over the years, several suggestions have been made for ways to reduce the flight ticket price and one of them is the new revolutionary concept of a standing passengers cabin. The main idea of this cabin concept is that the passengers will be transported in their standing position during flight instead of the current seated position. By having the passengers standing, this allows more people to be accommodated within the available cabin space. Hence the cost of flying can be distributed to more people and subsequently the ticket price per passenger will be reduced. This paper discusses the standing cabin concept from the ergonomics aspect of the vertical seat design for use in the standing cabin, highlighting some design recommendations to make it more suitable for human body.
