Abstract

In 1970 and 1971 a large scale forest inventory was carried out in Bavaria, which supplied us for the first time with reliable data about quantity and structure of growing stock in the small forest propriety. At in inventory key-date (Jan. 1, 1971) the growing stock volume amounted to 223 mill. cubic m (Efm. o. R), that is 44% of the total stockvolume in Bavaria (509 million cubicmeters). The share of growing stock volume of the small forest propriety is in approximate relation with its share in area (45 percent). Spruce participates with 53 percent in area and 61 percent in stock volume, followed by pine with 31 percent in area and 27 percent in stock volume. The younger age groups are represented above average in area and volume. The thinning rate has been very low for at least twenty years. This fact creates considerable silvicultural problems. The stocking density of the old growth is found between the optimum and critical density level and, thus, lies higher than anticipated up to now.
