Abstract

The present study focused on the validation of an appropriate German questionnaire for the assessment of coaches' burnout. The aim was to identify an instrument that is adjusted to sport-specific demands and might fill the gap of a sport-specific instrument in this field. For this purpose, the developed measuring instruments MBI-T and CBQ were compared with the general validated HBI by using a heterogeneous sample of 123 coaches. Additionally, the structure was tested by a confirmatory factor analysis. The reliability coefficients of the MBI-T and CBQ were in a sufficient range (=0,70–0,87), whereas the HBI showed no adequate scores and was not included into further evaluations. The factor analysis revealed more favorable fits for the MBI-T in contrast to the CBQ. Furthermore, the final test of the criterion validity by correlation with the Recovery-Stress Questionnaire for Coaches (RESTQ-Coaches) showed the expected significant results for both questionnaires. Based on the current study, the MBI-T represents the more adequate questionnaire for assessing coach burnout by having the favorable values. Because of the adaptation of the item structure, the MBI-T seems to examine the specific disorder adequately. Moreover, the comparison to English language studies is given by the frequent use in international research.
