Abstract

Fifty-seven patients with stage III and IV (stage-grouping UICC 1987) carcinoma of the head and neck were primarily treated with both chemotherapy and radiotherapy at the same time. Radiation therapy was administered in two series in daily fractions of 2 Gy up to a total dose of 70 Gy. On the first five days of each series a daily dose of 20 mg/m2 body surface Cis-diamino-dichloroplatin (II) (Cis-DDP) was given intravenously. In the group of T3-tumors, there were 78% complete remissions and 89% complete or partial remissions, while in the group of T4-tumors, 46% complete remissions and 92% complete or partial remissions were found. In cases of N2-metastases there were 63% complete remissions and 89% complete or partial remissions, 43% complete remissions and 86% complete or partial remissions occurred in the group of N3-metastases. Complete remissions were obtained in 46%, and complete or partial remissions both of the primary tumor and of eventual metastases were obtained in 79%. However, the disease-free intervals for the majority of the patients were short. Only half of them stayed recurrence-free for longer than six months, while only one-quarter were recurrence-free for longer than 12 months.
