Debate regarding eradication of insect pests is not new. Congress appropriated funds early in this century for eradication of the European corn borer (Ostrinia nubialis (Hubner)). The effort was made—and failed. One result has been 2 generations of major professors informing their graduate students that “Eradication is a politicians' term. They really mean control.”
