Abstract
Unified power flow controller (UPFC) is a typical FACTS device which flexibly controls the transmission line power flow. The first UPFC device in Shanghai has been constructed in Yunzaobang Substation. The launched UPFC can balance the power flow of the two transmission lines with different impedances connecting Yunzaobang Substation and Zhabei Substation. The UPFC device inserts a series voltage into the transmission line so as to compensate the transmission line impedance difference. A parameter design method based on this idea is proposed in this paper. Current flow through series converters are usually much larger than shunt converters. And shunt converters are often working as STATCOMs. Thus, rated power level may not be the same. Different MMC topologies may be adopted for shunt and series converters. Future expansion of the substation may launch more UPFCs. One shunt converter on the bus and several series converters on each feeder line will be flexible. Since the power to maintain DC voltage is small, a single parallel converter in a substation may be enough as well. This paper also presents a small DC grid for substation. A parallel converter working in synchronous motor mode is connected to the DC bus to maintain the DC voltage. All other converters connected to the DC bus are series-connected in feeders. They all work in compensation mode.
