Abstract

Abstract Mechanical modeling of damage in metal matrix composites is examined using both overall and local approaches. The damage elastic and plastic constitutive equations in the composite are derived using both approaches. It is shown that both approaches are equivalent in terms of the damage elastic and elasto-plastic stiffness matrices. Consistently derived overall-local relations are used to prove the equivalence of the two approaches.
