Abstract

It is shown that the fully quantum one-dimensional Holstein molecular model is thermodynamically equivalent to a problem of a classical “charged” impurity gas on a ring. The interactions among the equivalent classical impurities are explicitly derived. The impurities interact via exponential potentials modified by weight factors sensitive to the distribution of charges. The “ideal gas” approximation gives rise to the well-known Holstein's small polaron band.
