Abstract
Libraries use various types of equipment for information handling to improve the speed, accuracy and quality of work and reduce the cost and effort involved. Instead of purchasing equipment, it may be hired or leased, or bureau services used. Outlines the facilities which libraries require to be able to use equipment effectively. Identifies four basic types of equipment: electronic data processing; reprographic; audiovisual; and binding. Discusses problems associated with the use of equipment by libraries in developing countries. Describes the centralized equipment facilities at the Sri Lanka Scientific and Technical Information Centre (SLSTIC), which provides services to other libraries in Sri Lanka.
