Graboske, Harold C., Jr. Abstract An analysis is made of the equilibrium thermodynamic properties of ionizing and dissociating gas mixtures in a system where many-body interactions are significant. The use of certain approximations, such as single-level partition functions or hound-state cutoff methods to remove divergences in the atomic partition functions, lead to thermodynamic inconsistencies. A statistical-mechanical procedure is outlined which, for an appropriate many-body potential, includes a complete set of perturbed eigenstates, a nondivergent bound-state sum, and continuous and differentiable thermodynamic properties. Several theoretical models are applied to a solar-composition mixture to evaluate the region of validity of idealgas theory and the importance of various interaction effects.
