Abstract

The equilibrium concentration of vacancies in the crystal at melting is calculated from a new generalization of density functional (DF) theory. The concentration of vacancies in the hard sphere crystal at coexistence is predicted to be in the range 10 −9 to 10 −12. This result, which is sensitive to the precise details of the input liquid correlation functions, is compared with other estimates.
