Abstract

AbstractThe extraction of copper, nickel and cobalt from solutions of constant ionic strength by naphthenic acid has been studied as a function of pH, metal and naphthenic acid concentration. The extracted species in benzene solution have been identified as Ni2R4,4RH and Co2R4,4RH while an empirical formula of CuR2RH may be written for the copper complex, where RH represents the naphthenic acid. In the case of the copper however there is indirect evidence for a dimeric complex. The extractions are shown to conform with the general pattern of liquid cation‐exchange as exemplified by the alkyl phosphoric acids and the aromatic sulphonic acids.
