Abstract

Equilibrium constants for the complexation reactions of divalent copper and zinc ions and polyacrylic acid (PAA) were determined at 25°C from batch ultrafiltration results at an initial concentration ratio of PAA to metal ion of 2 and a pH value lower than ca. 3.50. The average coordination number of negatively charged PAA groups interacting with one metal ion was also obtained, with initial concentration ratios of PAA to copper ion up to 15. A simple equilibrium model proposed in this work enabled us to satisfactorily predict the rejection coefficient of metal ions in the presence of PAA. In addition, the effect of the formation of soluble metal hydroxy complexes on the rejection coefficient of the metal ions was examined.
