Abstract

The nonlinear equilibrium solution of the secondary convection in a vertical fluid layer between two parallel plates with different temperatures is obtained by the Newton-Raphson method. We confine ourselves to two-dimensional flows and assume that the aspect ratio of the fluid layer is very large. The energy of the fundamental mode of equilibrium solution and the Nusselt number are evaluated for various values of the Grashof number G and the Prandtl number σ. The result shows that the Nusselt number has a maximum at σ ∼ 0.2 for G = 1000.
