Abstract

The experimental data obtained in a number of published works and indicating that graphite in alloys of the Fe-6.67% C system forms at a temperature above the eutectoid temperature and cementite forms at a temperature below the eutectoid temperature are presented. These data and our results obtained earlier for substitutional alloys are used to draw the conclusion that the eutectoid line is a boundary between the fields where activity has opposite signs; that is, an ordering-separation phase transition occurs when this line is intersected. A new Fe-6.67% C phase diagram is presented; in contrast to the generally accepted double phase diagram, it takes the appearance of an ordinary single phase diagram.
