Abstract

The ground state equilibrium deformations, electric quadrupole moments and deformation energies are calculated for even nuclei in the heavy element region. Projected wave functions (PBCS) corresponding to a definite number of particles are used. It is found that the main effect of using the PBCS wave functions instead of the BCS ones appears at the beginning of the region and consists in the earlier appearance of the deformation and in its larger values.
