Abstract

Equilibria in the following reactions have been investigated in the range of 1550° to 1700°C : 1) H2 + O_ (in liquid Fe) = H2O, 2) CO + O_ (in liquid Fe) = CO2, and 3) H2 + FexO (liquid wustite) = H2O + xFe (liquid). Solubility of oxygen in liquid iron is obtained indirectly with a high degree of accuracy from the equilibrium data on reactions 1 and 3. The results are expressed in thermodynamic functions, and correlated with new data on the standard free energies of H2, H2O, O2CO, and CO2.
