Abstract

The kinetics of reaction of thetris-(5-X-1,10-phenanthroline) iron(III) ions where X=Br or Cl have been studied in detail in 0–100% sulphuric acid solutions. Relationships between the rates of reactions and the activity of water have been examined. No reaction occurs without water present. The reactions are interpreted in terms of covalent hydrate and pseudo-base formation. By taking into account previous studies, rates and magnitudes of hydrate formation for these and some other related complexes can be estimated.
