Abstract

Max Planck took a dim view of women straying far from domesticity (see box). Come to that, there have never been many female scientists in the society bearing his name, the Max-Planck-Gesellschaft (MPG). In 1990 only 293 of the 2343 scientists (13%) were women. This included just two of the 201 full professors and scientific directors, and only one of the 58 group leaders. And the situation for physicists may be much worse, as those figures include the medical and social sciences. Latest statistics suggest that in the “hard” sciences women may represent only about 7% of the workforce.
