Abstract

Standardised methods for determining prevalence rates of pressure ulcers has been lacking. Therefore, studies are not always comparable as there are differences in the patient groups, definitions of pressure ulcers and methods for data collection. The European Pressure Ulcer Advisory Panel (EPUAP) has developed a European-wide prevalence survey methodology, which has been used in several European countries. The EPUAP-protocol has been translated to Swedish and two prevalence studies have been conducted at Uppsala University Hospital and one at Malmo University Hospital. The aim of this paper is to present the modified EPUAP-protocol as well as our experiences in using the methodology. Pressure ulcers have been described as a national quality indicator and the protocol could facilitate the follow up of an important nursing area.
