Abstract

X-band EPR measurements on Mn 2+ -doped single crystals of Co 0.5 Zn 0.5 SO 4.7 H 2 O and Co 0.5 Zn 0.5 SiF 6.6 H 2 O have been performed from room temperature to liquid-nitrogen temperature. The spin-Hamiltonian parameters are estimated using a rigorous least-squares fitting technique, employing numerical diagnalization of the spin-Hamiltonian matrix. The variation of linewidths as a function of temperature has been studied in detail, and the spin-lattice relaxation times of the host Co 2+ ions have been estimated from the probe Mn 2+ EPR linewidths. The relaxation times, indeed, support the fact that in these hosts the important mechanism for Mn 2+ linewidth is the host (Co 2+) spin-lattice relaxation. Further, the present EPR data indicate that CoSO 4.7H 2O crystal is isomorphous to ZnSO 4.7H 2O.
