Abstract

More accurate EPR experimental results than hitherto and the resulting spin-Hamiltonian parameters b l m for the Gd 3+ ion in the rare-earth trichloride hexahydrate (RTH) hosts are presented. An investigation is made of the extent to which the changes in the host lattice parameters and in the host-ion radius as they contribute to the point-charge calculation of the crystal-field parameters A l m for the Gd 3+ ion embedded in RTH hosts, can explain these experimental results. It is found using the point-charge model, plus the assumption of a linear relationship between A l m and b l m , that these effects do not fully explain the observed systematics.
