Abstract

Electron–electron exchange coupling and its consequences for EPR spectroscopy of species containing more than one paramagnetic center are discussed. Various examples are worked through in the spin Hamiltonian formalism. For strongly coupled species, the relationships between the spin Hamiltonian parameters of the total spin states and those of the constituent spins are discussed. We explore the interplay of isotropic exchange and Zeeman, hyperfine, zero-field splitting, and anisotropic and antisymmetric exchange effects. Keywords: EPR; exchange coupling; strong exchange; weak exchange; isotropic exchange; anisotropic exchange; antisymmetric exchange; Zeeman interaction; hyperfine interaction; zero-field splitting
