Abstract

The cytogenetic effects of purified mycotoxins produced by toxicogenic strains of two species of grain fungi were studied in the growing root meristem of Allium cepa. Both toxins, the T-2 toxin of Fusarium tricinctum and Satratoxin H of Stachybotrys alternans are strong mitotic inhibitors in concentrations higher than 10 ppm (w/v). Their potential to arrest metaphases and to induce c-mitotic chromosome morphology is comparable to the action of colchicine.
