Abstract

Polybutadiene (PB) was functionalized using in situ generated dimethyldioxirane (DMD) as oxidant and tetra-n-butyl ammonium bromide as phase transfer catalyst (PTC). The oxidation ability of polybutadiene in various microstructure configurations was studied in detail at various reaction times and the products were identified using 1H-NMR, 13C-NMR and FT-IR. An important observation in this reaction was the detection of any side products due to ring opening of oxirane or other over oxidation reactions. Also, it was found that relative reactivity depends on chain microstructure in the following way: 1,4-cis > 1,4-trans > 1,2-vinyl C=C bonds. This method is easy, eco-friendly, convenient and the reaction conditions are straightforward.
