Abstract

Background: Throughout our institution, unit-based observers (UO) have long been reporting hand hygiene (HH) compliance. In January 2017, we began an independent audit by external staff observers (EO) to reduce bias in observation reporting and validate the accuracy of the data. The EO audits revealed lower HH compliance. This led us to pilot the unit-wide Just-in-Time Coaching (JITC) program to engage and empower staff to set the standard and take ownership of HH practices in their unit.
